When I think of all the 1st-Class eyeshadow palettes that the beauty industry has to offer, there are two which particularly spring to mind: The Urban Decay ‘Naked’ palette, and the Too Faced ‘Chocolate Bar’ palette. I have heard both bloggers, and make-up artists alike, proclaim either one of these palettes to be their, “favourite palette of all time!”

It can’t be disputed that both palettes are fantastic in their own right, and both share many similarities. Both retail at the same price (£39.00); both are born from beauty brands of an equally reputable standing; and both are advertised as having relatively ‘neutral’ colour-pans.

Having used the Naked palette for many years, and having recently added the Chocolate Bar palette to my collection, I decided to review and rate both palettes alongside each other. In order to do so fairly, I’ve separated my reviews into three categories: Packaging & presentation; colour range; and application. My goal? To see which of these palettes are better than the other! (Gulps anxiously)

So without further ado, let’s begin!

Packaging & Presentation

‘Naked’ Palette: 7/10

This is a classically clean palette design, with the velvet-effect packaging adding a luxurious touch to the product. However, having purchased several of these palettes over the past few years, I know that this look doesn’t last long. The velvet becomes dirty over time, with the gold letters fading and wearing-away. This is reason why, I believe, Urban Decay decided to release the subsequent Naked palettes in a tin-style packaging.

‘Chocolate Bar’ Palette: 9/10

Too Faced learned from Urban Decay‘s slight hiccup. This packaging is durable and and very travel-friendly. Too Faced decided to avail from an adorable chocolate-bar novelty design. Not to mention that the eyeshadows themselves smell of chocolate, and are named after all the delicious types of confectionery you can imagine. (‘Salted Caramel’ and ‘Triple Fudge’ being scrumptious examples)

Colour Range

‘Naked’ Palette: 10/10

When it comes to the colour selection of the Naked palette, I can only say the following: This is the most perfect neutral eyeshadow-palette that the world has to offer. Whilst they are more ‘muted’ than the Chocolate Bar palette, there is not one colour that I don’t like or wouldn’t use. And trust me, that says a lot – this is the only eyeshadow palette I’ve ever owned where I use every single colour.

‘Too Faced’ Palette: 9/10

These colours are also fabulous. I praise this palette for introducing me to my favourite transition colour of all time: ‘Salted Caramel’. Also, I adore how the two ‘highlight’ shades are the largest in size, as these are the two I use with every look I create with this palette. However, there are one or two shades which I personally wouldn’t use as much as others, such as ‘Strawberry Bon Bon’ and ‘Candied Violet’. Although, each colour is individually appealing and stunning.

Application

‘Naked’ Palette: 10/10

‘Too Faced’ Palette: 10/10

This, in my opinion, is what elevates these two brand’s eyeshadows above others. These eyeshadows are incredibly pigmented, buttery to touch, and easy to blend. I have nothing bad to say about either. “Five stars” to both Urban Decay and Too Faced – for rightfully declaring true eyeshadow-royalty.

Final Verdict

This is possibly the most difficult review I’ve ever undertaken, and equally as heartbreaking to deliver the results. I love both of these palettes. I mean that, I love them. But I took an average of each palettes’ marks, and here are the final scores:

‘Naked’ Palette: 9/10

‘Chocolate Bar’ Palette: 9.3/10

Too Faced wins (for now)! If I have to be honest, I’m very surprised! In my opinion, Urban Decay’s packaging is what marginally let themselves down – but who can compete with chocolate-scented eyeshadows? However, I will always stand-by Naked as a holy-grail product. In the long run, this is the one palette that I know I will always love above all others. Like I previously stated, this is the perfect neutral palette. However, Too Faced deserves credit too for creating an equally exquisite palette with sensational shades.
